Specific course information
Brief description  : This course contains general introduction (problems and application of soil mechanics), soil and its formation process, index properties (water content, specific gravity, unit weight, void ratio, degree of saturation, grain size analysis, Atterberg’s limit) and classification (BS, ASTM, AASHTO), compacting (laboratory & field, density control in the field), soil stress, seepage (permeability, laboratory and field permeability test; layered soil/ anisotropic, flownet, seepage pressure, seepage at soil embankment, filter), introduction to soil shear stress.
Prerequisite Courses : Introduction to Geology and Geotechnics (Semester II)
Required/elective : Required
Studio work : N/A
Laboratory work : Students to conduct soil index properties test, soil compaction, permeability.
Specific goals of the course
Specific outcomes : The students are expected to understand the soil index properties, soil classifications, compacting classifications, effective stress, soil permeability, and introduction to soil shear strength.
Student outcomes :
  1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering in civil engineering fields
  2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to have data analysis and interpretation
  3. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve civil engineering problems by considering local resources

  1. General introduction, problems and application of soil mechanics
  2. Definition of water content, specific gravity, unit weight, pore number, degree of saturation, relative density, relative density
  3. Granular soils and clay minerals
  4.  Atterberg’s limit, Soil classification
  5. Soil compaction
  6. Effective stress
  7. Introduction of laboratory test equipment
  8. Soil permeability, Seepage; Bernoluli and Flownet Theory
  9. Piping on water buildings
  10. Safe factor against piping
  11. Seepage pressure on the structure
