BACKGROUND
The origin of this laboratory was a grant from Public Works Department during the late Minister Prof. Dr. Ir. Soetami, to Faculty of Engineering (Civil Engineering) for the good cooperation in Water Tidal Project. In 1973, P4S PU-Faculty of Engineering UGM Laboratory building at UGM Kuningan’s land was given by Minister of Public Works Prof. Dr. Ir. Soetami to UGM representative, Dr. Ir. Soejono. This building was refurbished in 2007 by Minister of Public Works Dr. Ir. Joko Kirmanto with the intermediation by Ir. Darmanto, Dip. HE, M.Sc. (as successor). Besides that, Faculty of Agriculture UGM was also granted 2 units, which are: for Soil Laboratory and Test Farm Laboratory. These three units are located in one complex at Kuningan Yogyakarta.
When the cooperation project between Public Works Department and Universities were abolished, the building for Faculty of Engineering was changed to become an area for academic activities such as Recovery Techniques Laboratory, Environmental Engineering Laboratory, Traditional Technology Laboratory and serve university’s program such as Kuliah Kerja Nyata (Community Service Program).
The most stand out of them was Traditional Technology Laboratory. This laboratory has strong legality base, such as the implementer for KAGAMA conference in 1981, which succeeded in entering Traditional Technology into GBHN at the time.
In the area which Engineering building is located, other buildings which represents Traditional Technologies in various region of Indonesia were built systematically. The Traditional Technology Area term become well known and popular, because of its periodically unique activities in there. It was proven that Traditional Technology is needed particularly to accompany more advanced technologies. Lots of foreign guests had visited the Traditional Technology Lab, such Japan, Europe, and USA. They are kindly accepting and even enthusiastic with the existence of the laboratory.
Even though this ex P4S Faculty of Engineering UGM Lab has some names befitting its functions, the most developed and most known thing is its function to serve as Traditional Technology Lab.
TECHNO-ARCHIPELAGO IN TRADITIONAL TECHNOLOGY AREA (TEKTRAS)
In the correlation of Techno-Archipelago, the buildings at UGM Traditional Technology are:
Various Buildings and Equipment
1. | Bamboo Bridge |
Local materials such as bamboo can be used as long as the construction is exact (the system) which is if only the bamboo only has compression load or tension load then its construction ability with the local materials is reliable enough.
2. | Water Dam |
Local materials which are mainly used are river stone, river sand and dolog wood. If the construction is precise then the big flood can be avoided with ease. The construction used here is wood construction, river stone piles and precisely-stacked sand sacks. The new principle used here is the flood coating in channel deviation.
3. | Honai House Construction |
Where the ability is fully shown from local materials (including its human resources) towards stability, ventilation and lighting problems. Its review is as a system, often related to its source of life (Wambadra and Topa).
4. | Tripikon-S and Filiorasi |
Here is shown that with the use of ex-local material, the ability to serve the processes of physics, chemistry and bacteriology process can be achieved well. This is the evidence of study results that have been conducted by professors and students.
5. | Water Transportation and Distribution to Households |
Water transportation and distribution to household can utilize bamboo pipes and simple controlling structures including kaptering. If it is made in a right way and the right system, the distance of distribution pipes can be very long up to 7 to 8 km.
6. | Fish Pond in West Java |
This building shows that the local method (traditional) including building materials and human resources could generate enough production well and safely. There is no significant side effect. This can be proven scientifically.
7. | Other tools and existing buildings such as various windmills, drainage building, Subromarto, Nalareksa, which are all located in Traditional Technology Region has a fairly good ability. |
Scientific Work related to Techno-Archipelago
Traditional Technology Laboratory contains scientific papers or research results from some lecturers and students from state and private universities, especially in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. It is proved that the local equipment and material can achieve quite important research results.
Notes (The Principles and Models)
In this laboratory, the vision or principle of techno-archipelago has been implied in Tektras term. In this kind of technology, it would be logical to use construction materials and equipment of local human resources. In the tradition word, there is an inherent understanding that the heritage is from ancestors. This does not mean that Tektras is a stagnant technology, but instead it will always adjust with the time. Although the principles are upheld, the environmental harmony will be established because of a trial and error process. In the Tektras area, there are also buildings or equipment that is better called Appropriate Technology.
ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
At this time, it can be said that there are interests from various corners of Indonesia, especially the Study Program once called the Academy of Environmental Health, the School of Hygiene Inspector Assistant, and also D3 Environmental Engineering (Polytechnic). Then again, it turns out the enthusiasm is not only coming from the students who are in Community Service program (KKN) and students of various disciplines who build the society according to their field, but also parts of society who care about the environment.
