Computing Laboratory

HEAD of LABORATORY
Dr. Eng. FIKRI FARIS

Engineering education including civil engineering field cannot be separated from the information technology. Many numerical calculations and modelling of structures have utilized computing technology and makes the calculation and design of civil engineering can be better and more efficient.

Roles of Computing Lab:

  • Learning Facilities
It is undeniable that the current technological mastery of computing and structural calculation program supports the demands of the professional world and competency development. Hence, computing laboratory must become a debriefing facility provider in understanding of computer use in civil engineering for students before interacting to professional world.
  • IT Library’s Access and Software as A Tool to Support the Curriculum and Research
The needs of licensed software and IT libraries as tools in the learning process in accordance with curriculum and research is increasingly indispensable. Hence, Computing Laboratory is expected to be a licensed software provider and IT libraries in the future so it can support learning and research process and development of computing in civil engineering.
  • Consultation
Computing laboratory is also expected to provide consultation facilities, especially for students at the CEED and public in general. It is expected to be able to provide computing lab experts who understand computer programming and modeling to solve students and public’s problem.
  • Training/Workshops
The demand for training is seen to be high enough to the department as well as to researchers/experts in CEED. For students, organizing training courses are expected to increase students’ understanding of how to perform the modeling and calculations using civil engineering software as a provision to the professional world.
  • Web/Software Services
In the future, the laboratory is expected to develop simple civil engineering web-based software, where it can be used for students and the public in general.

Facilities

  1. Lecture Room I
It is located in the 2nd floor of the west wing of CEED and used specifically for lecture activities and training software with the room capacity is 25 Computer. Currently, there are 23 active computers which consists of 9 Core i7 PCs, 6 Core i5 PCs, and 8 Dual Core PCs.
  2. Lecture Room II
It is located in the 3rd floor of north wing of CEED and used for lecture activities, training software, computer services, online printer and internet. There are 32 active computers which consists of Core i3 PCs, Core 2 Duo PCs and Dual Core PCs.
  3. Research Room
This room is used for lecturers and students (undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate) research activities. Currently, there are 3 PCs with specs 1 Core i5 PC and 2 AMD PCs. All computers in the room are provided with licensed software. The addition of PC with special specifications is necessary, since in 2015 there were about 18 students who conducted research at this lab.
  4. Licensed Software.
Currently, there are 41 software in the computing lab that consists of software for structures, soil mechanics and hydro. Of the 41 software, there are 25 software were purchased in the period 1996-2001 and available in diskettes but unable to be used. Besides HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS, there were also 14 other software used in the library, such as:
